Things looking better, especially compared to EPA!
Overall, average home prices in Redwood City are only down about 20% now from their highs at the end of 2007. While a 20% decline is still painful for many home owners, it is nothing compared to other communities.

Home Prices Rising, but don't get too Excited!
Redwood City is a perfect example of rising prices not equating to real appreciation in home values. While in the past few months we have seen average home prices rise from $734K to $935K, each month the average size of the houses and lots sold have also increased.

How to Really Save Big when you Refinance!

OK, this is not a Redwood City story, but it is topical to many out there. The other day I was with a friend and I mentioned that I was refinancing my house to take advantage of the lower rates and he replied that despite rates being lower for him too, he did not want to refinance and start the clock again of paying his mortgage for 30 years. Wow, common perception, but he could not have been more wrong!

Ruminating about Cervids

The San Mateo peninsula supports a significant deer population and, judging from observation plus comments from others, the number is growing. An abundance of water and cover but few predators results in an expanding population. Deer eat a wide variety of grasses and browse; plants, nuts, acorns, fruits, and berries, all plentiful here. However, as any homeowner within grazing range will tell you, deer also find most ornamental plants quite tasty.
Prices Continue to be Stable,
but Inventory High for County, not so for City!
While prices appear relatively stable in San Mateo County, inventories have never been higher. Obviously the market has not been able to absorb the extra inventory and this could put pressure on prices if this same pattern continues.

The "Best Friend" Fitness Regimen!

Parks like Pulgas Open Space, which welcomes dogs, are busy no matter what the weather. In fact, the outdoors, both woods and town, seems subject to a new paradigm. The canines are getting (dragging?) their owners, female and male, out and about. Perhaps the combined media and medical emphasis on exercise has helped, but it’s the dogs we see leading the way.

Dark Skies over Redwood City
on the 4th of July

While we will still have our Fourth of July parade this year, Redwood City will not have a fireworks show.  With all the budget cuts and layoffs that the city recently endured, spending over $50,000 for a half hour extravaganza in the night sky just seems like a luxury that we just can’t afford for the moment.

While I will miss the fireworks, I believe this is the right decisions for the City Council to make. I think it’s appropriate for us not spend the extra money on Independence Day. Independence means being responsible for yourself and having to make tough decisions today to assure your own long-term prosperity. Being responsible this year will mean a little less pizzazz in the night sky for Redwood City.

Redwood City gets Out Foxed No More?

Yesterday’s news was very welcomed. The news was that a local businessman intends to lease the Fox Theatre in Redwood City and live shows should resume this summer. What a great turn of events.
